The Florence Police Department is asking the public to name its new Mounted Patrol officers – the four-legged ones, that is.
The department, through its Facebook page, is asking for suggestions for names of a male Belgian Cross, and male and female quarter horses.
“We will take the top suggestions and have a vote in the near future,” the department says.

Among suggestions were Winston, Mr. Ed, Avalanche, Hero, and Vendetta.
Other suggestions came in threes – Andy, Barney and Thelma Lou; Odin, Thor and Valkyrie; Pride, Integrity and Guts; Maverick, Goose and Charlie; Thunder, Lightning and Daisy.
According to the department’s website, the Mounted Patrol works special events, such as street parties like the W.C. Handy Music Festival, and monitors parking lots during holiday seasons. The horses’ size allow officers to see over crowds and cars, and they can be used for crowd control.
