Bigg Boss has been the OG of guilty pleasure ever since its inception in India in 2006. But with years passing by, the most controversial reality tv show of the country, Bigg Boss, is losing its fan base. There are many reasons for this scary drop in viewership of Bigg Boss year after year.
Foremost, after the blockbuster and undoubtedly the most successful season of Bigg Boss — season 13, the makers are seemingly getting too desperate to keep the game show running, afloat and relevant. While their plight is understandable, their desperate measures whilst desperate times aren’t quite justifiable. To begin with, while makers’ attempt at pulling together a season despite a wold-wide lockdown is applauding but their desperation to make season 14 a replica of season 13 by bringing in one senior (read as famous ex contestant and/or winner(s)) each from season 7, 11 and 13 respectively, didn’t really make the cut. Because where this show is about watching celebrities survive in adverse situations, giving them seniors’ advise contradicts the very concept. Moving on, inviting not-so-famous ex-contestants to repeatedly participate in the show does not work for audience, because there’s a reason why these celebrity contestants were chucked out from the previous show.
The most important reason is the interference of contestants’ PR teams in running of the show. Bigg Boss is now running outside the house on Twitter, as it is running inside. Makers make decisions basis popularity of contestants on Twitter trends rather than their contribution inside the house. Do you really think iconic, meme-worthy dialogue like “baap pe jana nahin” and “Pooja what is this behaviour” would have been delivered by Dolly Bindra, Pooja Misra and the likes of Rakhi Sawant and Baba Om, had they been ‘Log Kya kahenge Conscious?’
Now, to top it all, season 16 is seeing a new avatar of the omnipresent entity, Bigg Boss. He has gained a level of respect in the past 16 years of not interacting with the contestants for no reason. Seeing Bigg Boss passing nasty comments in the housemates and seeking gossip out of them, could be fun some times, but doing this all the time is making his authenticity go for a toss.
Hopefully the show manages to pace up its dropping TRP numbers, otherwise it would be better if the makers draw the curtains on the show.
