Two suspects, including a teenager, are in the Jefferson County Jail without bond after being charged with capital murder in the shooting of a 44-year-old man at a Woodlawn gas station, police said Tuesday.
Jeremy Lee Hawkins, 18, and 24-year-old Jason Martez Johnson, both of Birmingham, were initially charged with attempted murder in the shooting of 43-year-old Birmingham resident Marcelo Hopson at the Chevron gas station Oct. 22, said Sgt. Monica Law.
Hopson was in a vehicle at the Woodlawn Chevron when someone opened fire on him. Police marked multiple shell casings in the parking lot of the convenience store.
The charges against Hawkins and Johnson were upgraded to capital murder after Hopson died of his injuries at UAB Hospital on Sunday, eight days after he was shot.
Both suspects are being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
