A Lanett man was arrested Friday night for attempting to murder a police officer.
Stefanus Benecke is accused of shooting his gun into a patrol vehicle sometime around 8 p.m. after officers with the Lanett Police Department in Chambers County approached a residence in the 1600 block of Tanyard Road. Benecke was allegedly on the property’s porch when he shot at the patrol vehicle as a police officer was preparing to exit it.
The officer was able to reposition the vehicle out of the line of fire, according to police, as other members of law enforcement responded to the scene.
Benecke arrested and booked into the Chambers County Detention facility on a charge of attempting to murder a police officer. The officer did not sustain any injuries. Police declined to release the officer’s name.
