Liam Hemsworth and Nick Jonas could have been in Bros.
During a recent interview with Yahoo! Lifestyle, Bros co-writer and star Billy Eichner, who was just recently in Australia promoting the release of the underrated, history-making gay romantic comedy film down under, opened up about how a certain Aussie hunk who we all know as Liam Hemsworth wanted his own cameo, and how it almost could have happened were it not for Australia’s strict travel regulations during the height of the ongoing global pandemic.
“Liam Hemsworth wanted to do a cameo in the movie and he was supposed to, and we had a whole Zoom meeting with him, and he was lovely and charming and funny, but then COVID hit again and he couldn’t travel from Australia just to do one scene in Bros, unfortunately,” Eichner revealed. “But that would have been fun!”
“In the movie, Luke and I go see a movie called The Treasure Inside, which is a fictional movie about, you know, two closeted frontiersmen during the California gold rush of 1812 – sort of indicative of the many movies about tragic, closeted men that we get and in Hollywood real straight actors play them – Brokeback [Mountain] and a million other ones,” Eichner said, giving readers more context as to what Hemsworth would have been doing in his role.
He continued, also revealing that a certain Jonas Brother (and another Miley Cyrus ex), Nick Jonas, was also being considered for a quick cameo appearance:
“We were going to shoot scenes from that movie, and Liam was going to be one of the tragic closeted frontiersmen. We never ended up shooting those scenes, but at one point we were going to with Liam and Nick Jonas.”
“Australia, you kept Liam from being in Bros!” Eichner joked to the publication.
While it would have been wild to see Hemsworth and Jonas play Oscar-baiting straight actors playing queer cowboys in a parody movie, Bros still did deliver some memorable appearances from beloved straight actors that included Will & Grace icon Debra Messing, Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson, Seth Meyers, and Amy Schumer, so we can’t complain!
Bros is now playing in theaters and is streaming on demand.
