More than 8 million people took advantage of the beta launch of the Department of Education’s student loan forgiveness website, the White House announced Monday. Now, with the full site up and running, users can submit their information online.

Borrowers can submit their applications here.

The site is simple and the application takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

Once on the site, borrowers will be asked to provide their name (including any former names) and Social Security number, date of birth, phone number and email. The next step is affirming they are requesting debt relief and are eligible under income guidelines. Users will not be asked to provide proof of income but stipulates the Department of Education may require documents to be provided by March 31, 2024 is requested.

Then, click the box to certify all information is correct and – a statement made under the penalty of perjury – and hit the submit button. You will receive an email confirmation of your submission, something you should hang on to for your records.

The application is available in English and Spanish versions and can be used via a desktop computer, tablet or cell phone. Paper applications will be made available later and people who used the beta version do not have to resubmit their information.

Loan holders could receive up to $20,000 if they received a Pell Grant in college or up to $10,000 if they have other federal loans, as long as they meet income requirements  – under $125,000 for individuals or under $250,000 for married couples in either 2020 or 2021.

Borrowers are encouraged to apply before Nov. 15 to have forgiveness applied before the freeze on student loan payments and interest restarts Jan. 1, 2023. Borrowers have until Dec. 31, 2023 to apply for debt forgiveness.
